Caterpillar begins

Hello, we are three GDK14 students named Hampus Lindstrand, Kajsa Jonsson and Louise Wollberg. We were introduced to a new project where we had to package insects as food. The idea behind this project is to introduce insects as a possible food source instead of the typical protein, such as beef or chicken. We are focusing on caterpillars, and we are making two different products. Frozen caterpillars and caterpillarpasta. The biggest challenge that we face is probably to make a product that people actually want to eat. Most of the people we interviewed seemed disgusted by the idea of eating caterpillars.

Week one

We started off the week by being assigned our bugs and our team got caterpillars. To do some research on the subject “eating caterpillars” we went out on the town to ask people if they would mind eating bugs. Many people we interviewed were happy to talk about climate change and the possibilities in eating insects as food, but when we asked them if they would buy insects to eat they suddenly changed their minds. We feel like the public is interested in the thought of eating insects, but do not have the balls to actually eat them. When we asked the local ICA about insects on their shelves they thought that we would see bugs thereĀ in about two-five years and they seemed positive to the idea of selling them in their stores.

After the interviews we started doing some prototypes to decide on size, color, and design and just to get started on the two packages we are doing. Everything feel very new to us since we haven’t worked with packaging before, so working in 3D is very exciting. We also made two creative briefs to guide us and is currently figuring out a moodboard. It’s very hard to imagine eating insects, but we will in 5 weeks convince you (and ourselves) that it’s possible.

Stay tuned!
