Building prototypes ~ Handling handles & packages

Hi there!

For this week Alice and I embarked on a mission to build our very first prototype of the box that, prior to this, only existed as a somewhat strange looking creation in our sketchbooks. First, we wanted to try our idea and see if it even worked (spoiler alert: it did).

Out of three different packaging solutions we both liked the “matchbox” best and thought it was the most suitable option for our product. Our only concern at this stage is if the bottom part of the box slides out if you hold it upright when containing a heavy knife… We wouldn’t exactly want that to happen, safety first. We plan however to experiment with trying to create just enough resistance so that it stays in place but at the same time is easy to open and close, since we want people to keep the box instead of throwing it away.

So we took to the “Mac-lab” and started to work in Illustrator with drawing/sketching our box. After finding out that it actually worked we started to work on the “real one” by going back to pen and paper as well as taking a lot of measurements. We also realised that perhaps it would be a good idea to further define our product and specify exactly how we wanted the layout to look. Although the two dimensional design elements will continue to be refined throughout the process, it’s nice to at least have an idea of what goes where and build from there.

As for the knives we started to sharpen our design for the knife handle(s). We wanted to create a pattern that could be used in many different ways and thereby making every knife unique but still maintain unity.

Stay Sharp!
