MNEME

An introduction from the team behind Mneme: Hanna, Sigrid and Mimmi. Our first and foremost goal for this project was to create a container for a product that is in actual need of one. Wether any luxury product can be labeled as sustainable when excessive consumerism and overconsumption is harmful to our planet was something we debated on. Eventually we decided upon creating a scented candle, hoping to shed some light on a local environmental issue.
Our company name, Mneme, is the greek word for memory. It derives from the name of a powerful titan, Mnemosyne, who was the goddess of memory in greek mythology. Today, this goddess shares her name with a rare butterfly. A butterfly that is highly endangered and close to become a memory only.
The Mnemosyne Parnassius butterfly is the provincial insect of Medelpad. Its larvae can only feed on the roots of a certain herb – Nunneört. (It is believed that the larvae dig trough earth, locating the root by its scent.) In traditional folk medicine, this herb was considered to be especially suitable for treating uterine diseases. This made our team, consisting of three uterus bearers, feel even more inspired and connected to this cause.
Another thing that we’ve been intrigued by during the concept stage is the thought of how scents can summon vivid and long forgotten memories. Or even be embedded in the memory of a larvae for survival.
Nog om larver, ljus och livmödrar. Nu tar vi helg./Mimmi, Sigrid and Hanna
