A new way to look at smoke detectors!

Two students who has entered a group-assignment where we are supposed to redesign a product that has been thrown away to basically give it a new purpose and also create a new packaging for this particular thing. In a way this is considered a recycle project.

Our product and idea

On the second day of this course, we all went to a place where it’s open to throw away all kinds of things, to pick out a product of our choice to redesign, that people tend to throw away. We took notice that people throw away their used smoke detectors, but we want to change the idea of them by inviting design in this matter. So that they become a furnishing detail instead of an object that is easily forgotten, which may lead to a life threatening disaster.

The idea of our product is to be constantly reminded to check and replace our smoke detectors because they serve such an important purpose to save lives. We want to create conversations regarding this subject instead of letting them blend in with the ceiling. Our vision of the product is to create smoke detectors that follows different seasons (winter, spring, summer and autumn) that invites people to regularly check and replace their smoke detectors as they normally do with, for an example, christmas decorations and such. By doing so, this will increase the fact that they actually work in a case of emergency.

To invite recycle in this subject, we will collect used ones and replace the actual smoke detector inside the product, the battery and place our new design on top so that it never has to be thrown away and instead being reused. Since it’s made of plastic, we hope that by doing this project decrease the amount of thrown away plastics in nature. Our plan is that later on maybe even change the actual material from plastic to something else because of our on-going environmental crisis.

When the product and packaging is finished, we will be presenting it at a recycle festival. We hope that by doing this people will be reminded of the importance of a functioning smoke detector, and also maybe like our design idea.
