New year‘s Day is considered to be the most important annual event in Japan. People participant in various types of events and activities, and pray for good luck during the upcoming year.

Of course there are also specially national dishes in New Year‘s Day.

“OSECHI” is one of them.

Osechi is specially-prepared New Year‘s dish.

Various kinds of beautifully-prepared dishes are set in four-tiered lacquer boxes.

Each of the dishes have meaning which reflects people’s wishes.

For example, fertility, health, prosperity, and longevity.

This is the traditional Osechi‘s style.

It is so formal that each family have original way to deal with this.

 

In the old days, family all together have Osechi to celebrate the upcoming  year.

Osechi was something to make at home.

But Japanese life style has been changed.

Family become compact.

We rarely live together with old people and many women work outside recently.

And young people don‘t know such the meanings of each dishes.

Furthermore, it becomes that osechi is not made at home but It becomes something to buy.

So, there are many kinds of Osechi at the department stores.

But these Osechi in traditional box are very expensive.

So, young people don‘t want to buy.

In Japan, young don’t take an  interest in the traditional dish, Osechi.

 

So, not traditional Osechi’s style but casual one is required nowadays.

So, we will propose the package of Osechi for casual style for young married couple.

The concept is  “Casual traditional dish”.

 

The first design point is the top of package.

Hatsuhinode is precious moment in New Year’s Day Japanese.

So, it is very meaningful that the top of package is the red round shape like the sun.

It means the opening  new year.

 

The second point is the round shape of the top cover.

Traditional Osechi‘s package is tiered lacquer box.

That is luxury and expensive box.

Since this package is used paper, simple and soft package can be casual style for young .

So not strict traditional dish of casual paper package will be accepted.

 

The third point is that Japanese Furoshiki is used as its design motif.

Furoshiki is Japanese traditional wrapping cloth.

The traditional Osechi box is almost wrapped with Furoshiki, so this package adopts such a traditional design essence.

 

In the package, there are 9 section. each section are filled with colorful and meaningful osechi’s food.  Young married couple pray for their health and good fortune through these foods.

 

This package doesn‘t remove traditional idea and atmosphere.
